Even though the federal mandate for standard rear vision in all vehicles by mid-2018 inches closer, there are a large number of new vehicles still rolling off assembly lines without a rear view camera. Back up cameras are still in demand from the aftermarket, and will be for the foreseeable future.

As a service to our great installers, the team here at Brandmotion has put together a complete list of the top Rear Vision opportunities by vehicle make, model and trim level. This guide will help indicate where the market is for aftermarket backup cameras. Below are just a handful of the makes and models with gaps in standard rear vision.

Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep Vehicles

Chrysler group vehicles present one of the largest markets for rear vision. Leading the group in rear vision opportunity gaps is the Jeep Wrangler. There are currently no rear vision cameras offered from the factory for the Wrangler, and with 175,000 of them sold in the US in 2014, that’s a BIG market. Rounding out the list are the Dodge Charger and Journey, as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, all with $1,000+ rear view camera packages.

    RAM

Installers dealing with RAM trucks will be happy to see a large money making opportunity for the popular line of pickups. Cameras are offered as options on all but the higher trim levels (Sport and Laramie). These systems can range in price from a few hundred dollars (if there is already a display screen) to over $1,000 for packages including the display and camera. Installers should expect to see rear vision business from the lower trim level Ram trucks hitting the road throughout 2015.

GM / Chevy / Cadillac Vehicles

You’ll find a host of General Motors vehicles still coming without cameras. Among the most notable are the Chevy Silverado, Malibu, Impala and Cruze. Impala buyers could be paying upwards of $1,100 for a factory camera and those looking to purchase a Malibu will find camera options with a range in prices from $1,125 to $1,850. For truck buyers considering a new Silverado, they’ll be looking at upgrading to LS trim to just have the option to purchase a camera for $325, other camera packages start at $1,000 to $1,600 for the Work Truck and LT/LTZ trim levels respectively.

Customers buying a high end vehicle like the Cadillac ATS will also be disappointed to see that rear vision isn’t standard on all trim levels. They can expect an extra $1,435 for the CUE and Surround Sound package.

These vehicles represent a large portion of GM vehicle sales, perfect for the installer or expeditor targeting these dealerships to increase rear vision sales.

    Ford / Lincoln

While Ford has started to include cameras with most of its fleet, the new F150 still leaves room for installers to capitalize on rear vision sales within the XL trim level. Back up cameras for the F150 command a $1,800 to $2,000 price tag!

    Audi
    range

There are a surprising number of opportunities for Audi vehicles! New car buyers could be paying upwards of $4000 to get camera on a SQ5 and many thousands of dollars for other vehicles from the manufacturer. With many of the vehicles coming without a rear view camera option, installers will have a field day offering cameras to protect high end vehicles from backover accidents!

    BMW

BMW vehicles have a surprising amount of open gaps for rear view cameras in all vehicle models except the 6 and 7 Series. Buyers could be looking at a $950 to $1,800 price tag, with some models approaching $4,000 to add a camera and other features!
